What information do we collect? How do we use it?
When you order CARFAX Vehicle History Reports on, you will be asked to enter the User ID and password that were provided to you by CARFAX. This information allows us to process your request and deliver your reports to you. You also have the option to save your User ID and password, by checking the box on the login screen. This information will be securely stored in a cookie. Saving your ID and password eliminates the need to log in each time you return to

For each CARFAX Vehicle History Report you request, you will also enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This is the unique 17-character identification number that is used to search our database for information about the vehicle's history.

We also track user traffic patterns to uncover ways in which we can improve the site and make it easier to use. We do not track what individual users read, but rather how many customers look at each page.

We also, of course, actively collect vehicle information from state and federal authorities and others in order to provide the CARFAX service. We do not seek any personally identifiable information -- such as the name, address or phone number of a vehicle owner -- in conjunction with this collection effort. If any such information is provided in conjunction with the vehicle information, CARFAX does not sell, trade, rent or otherwise transfer that information to anyone.

CARFAX may use dealer-reported information from the CARFAX Hot Listings Inventory Manager as part of a vehicle's permanent history. CARFAX may include this dealer-reported information in the CARFAX database, and present this information on CARFAX Vehicle History Reports offered to consumers and dealers.
